Dan Majewski

for SEPTEMBER 2001

Greetings everyone!

I always have a hard time deciding what I'm going to write in this space above the Band Member of the Month profile. I always try to appear witty and upbeat, even though most times I write this near the end of another long day. I figured that I would share a story from the jazz band's trip to Springfield for our performance at the State Fair relating to Mr. September.

Audrey (and her cell phone) rode the coach bus with the jazz band and chorale. Audrey is Mr. September's sister, in addition to being a member of the concert band. Mr. September called Audrey on her cell phone just about every 45 minutes or so to see where the bus was and how soon we would be arriving at the Fair. Since we were on a motor coach, we were enjoying watching movies (or parts of movies as time allowed. Ha!) and/or sleeping. Every time that phone rang, the whole back of the bus (which contained most of the jazz band) would start yelling (and joking, of course) at Mr. September and Audrey. I think poor Audrey was sorry that she told her brother that she would have her phone with her that day. I thought it was pretty funny. I hope Audrey and Mr. September did too! Let's meet Audrey's brother, the mad caller and Mr. September…..Dan Majewski!

Woo hoo!

Happily mitted,
Linda Riha
BMOTM Editor

First name: Daniel

In which town do you live?
Tinley Park

How do you make your living?
Computer Geek (Network Analyst Consultant) for PLP Digital Systems in Phoenix. I install and maintain Internet servers and print servers and data storage systems for large companies and the military.

How long have you been a member of the Arts Alive Band?
I joined the band in August of 1999.

The Majewski's don't always hang out with giant talking vegetables -- they're just here with some of the characters from “Veggie Tales”

What instrument(s) do you play?
Well, I play (in order of how well I play them):

  • Flute
  • Tenor sax
  • Guitar
  • Bass Guitar
  • Soprano sax
  • Bari sax
  • Piano
  • Alto sax (What I play in the Arts Alive! Band, hurts my ears!)
  • Clarinet

How long have you been playing it/them?
I started playing flute when I was about 10 years old. I played flute until my junior year and then switched to bari sax, which I played for 3 years after that. I started with guitar when I was about 12 years old. I have been playing it since then. I started with the alto sax 7 years ago and the soprano about 5 years ago along with my tenor sax. All of the other stuff I have been playing for a long time.
< Father and daughter practice their “street act”.

Afterwards, Dan shows his daughter how to work hard like a real musician. >

Are you involved in any other musical groups, either inside or outside the Arts Alive! system? If so, which ones?
I play in a praise band in Church every Sunday morning and sometimes on Sunday night and on Wednesday night also. I play the Tenor sax most of the time and alto sax in the formal church band.

What do you like most about this group?
There are many good musicians in this group. Most everyone seems to get along well. It is a good place to advance your playing skills.

Dan and the rest of the Oktoberfest truck band, shown here at only 10 mph.

Describe your best/favorite band moment:
The high point of last year for me was playing in Downtown Chicago at Maggiano's Little Italy. It was a good time and a lot of fun! The second best time was on the Oktoberfest float playing at 40 MPH down the middle of Harlem Avenue. I guess I'm a little strange!

What are your hobbies?

Music and Computers.

What is your favorite Jell-O flavor?
I don't like this stuff at all!

Is there anything else you want your band friends to know about you?
Well, my Sister joined this band a few years before me. She's Audrey Thomas and plays in the flute section currently. I really like playing my tenor [saxophone] in the jazz band. It's a great time.
