Barb Hines

for OCTOBER 2001

Hello!

Happy Fall everyone! I want you to know that I really enjoy preparing this segment every month. I have the pleasure of coordinating the questionnaires and pictures that are going to be used. People from our group can let their personalities come alive on paper so that other people from inside/outside the band can get to know information that they might not have known before. I would like to publicly note that I really appreciate the help I receive from our webmaster. The Lord knows that I couldn't do this segment by myself and I am personally glad that I don't have to. I enjoy the comments and praise that various people have given me, but please let the webmaster know that you appreciate his hard work as well.

Since I can only keep doing this segment if I have information, know that I am completely OUT of female questionnaires for the band member of the month. If you are female and haven't been featured here yet, please turn in your form to me. If you need a form, please let me know and I will make sure you get one. Thank you!

This month we are going to meet a woman from our woodwind section. She's very nice (goofy as times also) and is also the sole reason we have a stable rehearsal location this fall. Let's get to meet Ms. October, Barb Hines.

Woo hoo!

Happily mitted,
Linda Riha
BMOTM Editor

PS Happy 5th Anniversary honey!

First name: Barbara

In which town do you live?
Burbank

How do you make your living?
I am an elementary and junior high band director in Kirby School District 140. I teach private clarinet lessons and also teach a Christian band two evenings a week.

of her mansion.

How long have you been a member of the Arts Alive Band?
I have been a member since November of 1993. There have been breaks in my ability to attend rehearsals due to schooling and other events, but I try to attend when I can.

Barb's dedication to the band doesn't stop with playing -- here she serves tuba player Eric Healy at a “Feed the Brass Section” benefit. >

What instrument(s) do you play?
In the Arts Alive group, I play bass clarinet and baritone saxophone, but I am trained in all of the band instruments plus stringed instruments as well.

How long have you been playing it/them?
I started playing clarinet in 1984 when I was in fourth grade. In high school (1988), I started playing bass clarinet and have enjoyed playing it ever since. It is now the year 2001 and I enjoy playing on both my bass and my soprano clarinets, as well as the baritone saxophone which I have played since I was a junior in college…so that makes:

  • 19 years playing clarinet
  • 14 years playing bass clarinet, and...
  • 9 years playing baritone saxophone

Barb hams it up with the clarinet choir.

Are you involved in any other musical groups, either inside or outside the Arts Alive! system? If so, which ones?
When Ray [Florenza, director of the Southwest Community Band] grovels and begs on his hands and knees, I will play clarinet for him in the Southwest Community Band or baritone saxophone for him in his saxophone quartet called TSQ. [Editor's note: Barb also plays baritone saxophone in the Arts Alive Jazz Band.]

What do you like most about this group?
What I like the most about being in the band are all of the fun-loving people that I get to play with. The atmosphere is fun and alive with humorous moments.

Describe your best/favorite band moment:
My best band moment took place in Germany 2000 when I got to conduct the band in Dudelsheim in the beer tent. After that concert many of the Germans were very interested and excited by a woman conducting the band.

What are your hobbies?
My hobbies involve working out in my school's weight room and running on the weekends in the woods where the air is fresh and crisp first thing in the morning.

What is your favorite Jell-O flavor?
Red raspberry, but you need to prepare it with mounds of whipped cream.

Is there anything else you want your band friends to know about you?
I am the proud new aunt to my twin niece and nephew, Cassie and Conrad. I get the joy of baby-sitting and/or helping my sister out frequently with her bundles of joy.

  • Adolescence is a time to discover your talents. This is Barb's.
  • Barb apparently has a habit of picking up guys on band tours. This is her catch on a 1988 high school tour.
