One of the original members of the band, Jim was also the longtime percussionist for the local popular band, Midnight. Jim's last gig in Tinley Park was at a block party featuring Midnight with numerous Community Band members in attendance. Details may be found in the Tinley Park Police Blotter for Saturday, August 20.

Jim and his family are moving to South Carolina to pursue new career interests. His musicianship and professionalism will be missed by the band, but he has graciously offered his services on the band's next World Tour.

BAND HAS BUSY YEAR

Expanded performance schedule highlights 2005

TINLEY PARK, IL - Lead by an ambitious Brendan Koch, the Tinley Park Community Band and Jazz Band went through 2005 with an active concert schedule:

  • The band's first performance this year was at the Midwest Music Festival at Lemont High School on Saturday, February 26. The Midwest Music Festival is a competition for high school bands and the Concert Band performed as the exhibition band while the judges are finalized their decisions.

  • On Sunday, March 13, the Jazz Band played to rave reviews at the spaghetti dinner fundraiser for the Victor J. Andrew High School German-American Exchange, which is raising money to send students to Germany. The dinner was held VFW Bremen Post 2791 in Tinley Park.

  • The Tinley Park Community Band and the West Suburban Concert Band cosponsored the 2005 CAVALCADE OF BANDS at Argo Community High School in Summit on Saturday, April 9. Also appearing were the Southwest Community Concert Band and the Argo Community High School Symphonic Band. The band wishes to thank ACHS, ACHS band director Bob Good and the ACHS Music Parents for hosting this year's Cavalcade.

  • On April 17, the Concert Band performed at an “Old-fashioned Sousa Concert” sponsored by the Tinley Park-Park District. The concert was a tribute to American composer John Philip Sousa and each band featured a Sousa composition. Bands in the concert included: St. George Elementary School, Central Middle School, District 140 Middle Schools, V.J. Andrew High School, host band Tinley Park High School and the Tinley Park Community Band.

  • The Jazz Band took the stage again on Sunday, April 24 at Tinley Park's new Public Library.

  • The Concert Band finished the Winter/Spring season with their regular Spring concert sponsored by the Tinley Park-Park District on May 1 at Prairie View Middle School in Tinley Park.

  • Finally, the Jazz Band was honored to perform at the inauguration for Tinley Park Mayor Ed Zabrocki and other recently elected village officials. The ceremony was held on May 2 at the Tinley Park Convention Center.

  • The band's summer season began with the Concert Band in a “Concert in The Park” on Sunday, June 12. This concert was held on the “band slab” on the east side of the Tony Bettenhausen Recreation Center in Tinley Park.

  • The Concert Band finished their summer by hitting the road and traveling to Bicentennial Park in downtown Joliet for an evening concert on Thursday, June 30 which was enthusiastically received by the crowd on a warm summer evening..

  • The Jazz Band took over for the second half of summer. On Saturday, August 20, they made a triumphant return to the Illinois State Fair in Springfield, Illinois. The day after, Sunday, August 21, the Jazz Band performed at their second “Concert in The Park” on the “band slab” at the Tony Bettenhausen Recreation Center at 171st Street and 80th Avenue in Tinley Park.

  • On Thursday, August 25, the Jazz Band made its own appearance at Joliet's Bicentennial Park. It was back to Joliet on Wednesday, August 31, as the band wrapped up summer with an appearance at Silver Cross Stadium to play the National Anthem at the Joliet JackHammers baseball game.

  • On Sunday, September 11, the band rocked and rolled through Tinley Park and gave a concert in Zabrocki Plaza at the annual Tinley Park Autumn Fine Arts Festival and Parade.
  • The Arts Alive! Jazz Band did its part for those on the Gulf Coast by volunteering their services at a hurricane relief drive at St. Joseph's High School in Westchester, Illinois on Saturday, October 8.

Set against a cold, gray, October sky -- and having to invoke a little-known codicil in their contract that allows them to play when the band size exceeds the audience size -- a good time was eventually had by all, especially at the post-performance dinner.

  • Sunday, November 6 was the band's annual Spaghetti Dinner fundraiser held at the VFW Bremen Post 2791 at 17147 S. Oak Park Avenue in Tinley Park from 1 to 5 PM. In addition to an outstanding spaghetti dinner and raffle prizes provided by area merchants, members of the band performed throughout the dinner, with a performance by the Arts Alive! Jazz Band ending the evening. We have pictures! Click here to see the official 2005 Spaghetti Dinner Photo Album.

  • The Concert Band ended the year on Sunday, December 4 in a combined concert with the Arts Alive! Chorale sponsored by the Tinley Park-Park District. It was the concert band's first appearance at Virgil Grissom Middle School.

The members of the band thank their friends, family and sponsors for all of their support throughout 2005.
